Getting started at the corporate level
Although construction activities are often not the main part of the core
business model of many client organisations, they do have a significant
impact on society. That’s why it is important to manage the social
impact of construction carefully. Some issues such as equal opportunities,
disability discrimination and health and safety are already addressed under
existing legislation.
There are a number of things you can do to make sure that the social impact
of your organisation (including construction activities) gets captured and
properly managed:
- First of all, check whether your organisation has a management system
or policy in place for managing the social impact of the entire business
- If there isn’t one, make the relevant people aware of this.
- Examine whether the impact of construction / property activities are addressed
and managed. If they are not, highlight this gap.
- Try to get buy-in and commitment at the highest level so that your organisation
will manage its construction / property activities in a socially responsible
way. Use this website and associated guide to strengthen your case.
- Check if there is commitment to key Social Responsibility principles and
if this is translated into day-to-day practice. If not, make the relevant
people aware of this.
